The castle in Niedzica is definitely one of the most interesting buildings in the Polish part of Spisz, as well as one of the largest historical attractions in the Polish Carpathians. It was built on a limestone hill (556 m a.s.l.), about 80 meters above the Dunajec level. Currently, this part of the Dunajec is a famous artificial dam lake - the Czorsztyn-Niedzica reservoir. The exact date of the castle's creation is unknown, but it can be approximated. Niedzica Castle was probably built between 1320 and 1325 because in the will of Wilhelm Drugeth the town of Spiš and Orava region from 1330, we are talking about the newly built castle "Dunajec". Earlier there was an earth and rampart defensive structure. The castle was founded on the initiative of Jan Berzevicze or his brother Rykolf, and the name of the castle "Dunajec" was taken from the river flowing at its foot. At that time, the river separated the Hungarian state from Poland. The castle was also called "Niedzica" - from the village located nearby. The castle is an excellent example of a mountain fortress. Both this and the castle in Plawiec and Stara Lubownia were the Hungarian watchtower and stronghold on the Polish border. When the castle ceased to fulfill defensive functions, it became a country residence. One of the oldest parts of the castle is the Gothic upper castle. This part comes from the reign of the Berzevicz family. To him belongs the largest and the largest defensive tower of the castle. In 1470, after the death of the last representative of the Berzeviczych year, Jan Schwarz, the castle became the property of the Spiš county Emeryk Zapoly. He enlarged it significantly by adding external defensive walls with towers. The royal Zapoly family did not own the castle for a long time, because in 1507 the sister-in-law of Emeryk and mother of the later Hungarian king Jan, sold the castle. Andrzej Horvath became the next owner of the castle. The following years of the castle's history are very tragic and stormy, it is undoubtedly also associated with the situation of Hungary at that time. After the defeat of the Hungarian army in the battle with the Turks at Mochacz, the Hungarian state and the civil war broke up. As a result of hostilities, successive castle owners changed. In 1529 the castle was donated by the Hungarian king Jan Zapolya to the Polish magnate Hieronim Łaski. It was a gift for merits. Grace famous for his thriving life quickly got rid of the castle. The castle returned to the Horvaths, and Jan Horwath became the new owner. In 1589, the castle was bought by Jerzy Horwath from Palosca. Thanks to his efforts, the castle was thoroughly rebuilt, giving it the character of a Renaissance residence. The residential part was expanded both in the middle castle, which came from this period, as well as in the lower castle, in which a new residential road was built next to the perimeter wall. Around 1570, the castle passed into the hands of another owner - it was Giovanelli - these were again stormy years in the history of this stronghold. The castle was conquered using cannons by Imre Thokoly's troops and Salantsy bandits. The last representative of the Giovanelli family Jan died in 1776 and once again the castle returned to the Horvaths. The family residence of the Horvaths from Palosca was the castle in Plawiec, but after the fire that destroyed the building, Andrzej Horvath renovated the castle in Niedzica and settled in it. After the death of Andrzej Horvath, the castle was taken over by his brother Ferdynand. His prematurely dead son was the last male representative of the Horvath family. Salamons were related to the Horvaths and they became the heirs of the castle in Niedzica. They renovated the stronghold, which in the nineteenth century was once again destroyed by fire. They lived here until 1945, when as a result of the land reform, the castle became the property of the Treasury. From 1920, the castle in Niedzica together with part of Spisz was within the borders of Poland.
